The Old Fort or the Arab Fort is the oldest building in Stone Town and a major visitor attraction. It annually hosts the world renown 'Sauti za Busara' music festival.

An icon of Stone Town, the House of Wonders is home to the Museum of History and Culture of Zanzibar. It rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. The House of Wonders is currently under construction.

Here you will get the opportunity to visit the tortoise sanctuary, which contains a large colony of giant tortoise imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century.

The first ever Museum dedicated to the world legend Freddie Mercury, located in the same house where Freddie and his family stayed until they moved to England in 1963.

The Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Joseph is one of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town, as well as one of its main visitor attractions. The church is regularly used by the local Catholic community, with several masses being held each Sunday.

The shopping strip is a fun walk, and as it is mostly frequented by locals, it is full of colour and various items that include fruit, vegetables, spices, traditional fish and meats and local products from all over the island.

Built by Sultan Barghash in the late 19th century, these were the first public baths on Zanzibar. The various rooms were renovated in 2017 and, although there’s no longer water inside, it's easy to imagine them in use in bygone days.

One of the best ways to ease into Zanzibar life is to stop by this waterfront public space. It's a social hub for tourists and locals alike; there are two small cafes with outside seating, benches under shady trees, a children's play park, and food stalls in the evening.
